New Delhi: Mumbai's star batter Musheer Khan may have to sit out of the upcoming Irani Trophy after sustaining a fracture in a road accident, sources confirm. The 19-year-old, who made a name for himself in the recent U-19 World Cup and Duleep Trophy, was all geared up to play for the Ranji Trophy champions against Rest of India in the prestigious tournament. Musheer, who is also the younger brother of India's Sarfaraz Khan, leaves a big void in Mumbai's middle order, forcing the team to rethink their strategy for the upcoming matches.
Based on the reports, Musheer was travelling to Lucknow from Kanpur with his father Naushad Khan. However, the details of the accident are yet to come out in public. Meanwhile, his elder brother Sarfaraz (who made his India debut against England earlier this year), is a part of the Indian squad against Bangladesh in the ongoing Test series.
Sarfaraz has also been named in the Mumbai squad for Irani Trophy. “He didn’t travel with the Mumbai team to Lucknow for the Irani Cup. He was probably travelling from Azamgarh, with his father, to Lucknow when the accident happened,” a source was quoted as saying to TOI.
Ever since Musheer’s good show with the bat at the U-19 World Cup, the right-hander continued to impress the selectors with his consistency. He played nine Ranji Trophy games in 2024, scoring 716 runs, including a double century against Baroda in the quarterfinal, a fifty in the semifinal against Tamil Nadu and a hundred in the final against Vidarbha.
In the Duleep Trophy, Musheer scored 181 for India B against India A. However, he failed in the next two games. Despite that, Musheer was heavily considered for the India A that is likely to tour Australia. But with the news of his fracture coming up, it is still unsure how long will it take to heal.
